The Ten Gurus in Sikhism
Sikhism was founded by Guru Nanak (1469 – 1539) in North India.
Sikhs believe the word of God has come through the Ten Gurus.
Sikhism is a monotheistic religion. They believe in one God.
Sikhs also believe in karma and reincarnation.
They do not teach asceticism as a means to reach salvation.
Meditation is an important part of the Sikh faith.
Sikhs believe in equality of all humans. They do not accept discrimination on the basis of sex, creed or caste.
The final of the Ten Gurus was Gobind Singh.
After his death the sacred scriptures called “The Guru Granth Sahib” is considered the final Guru.

The Ten Sikh Gurus:
Nanak1469 -1539 | The founder of Sikhism. He composed 974 hymns.He was a pioneer of a castless social order. |
Angad 1504 – 1552 | He was chosen by Nanak.Angad composed the Gurmukhi, the script used for the Punjabi language, as well as 62 hymns. |
Amar Das1479 – 1574 | He became Guru at the age of 73.He introduced the Sikh rituals for birth and death.His most famous hymn is Amand Sahib. |
Ram Das1534 – 1581 | He founded Amritsar, the most sacred city for Sikhs.His marriage hymn is used in Sikh weddings. |
Arjan1563 – 1606 | He was the son of Guru Ram Das. He built the Golden Temple.He was the first Sikh martyr. He was tortured and killed for refusing to convert to Islam.He wrote 2,216 hymnes, which was the largest contribution to “Guru Granth Sahib”. |
Hargobind 1595 – 1644 | He was the son of Guru Arjan. Hargobind’s three wives bore him six children.He taught that the Guru had to be a military leader as well as a spiritual leader.He trained soldiers and built a fortress in Amritsar. |
Har Rai1630 – 1661 | He was the grandson of Guru Hargobind. |
Har Krishan 1656 – 1664 | He was the son of Guru Har Rai. He became Guru only 5 years old. He died at the age of 8. He died of smallpox.His last words were “Baba Bakala”. The next Guru would be from the villiage of Bakala |
Tegh Bahadur1621 – 1675 | Tegh Bahadur means “hero of the sword”. He was the son of Guru Hargobind.He founded the Sikh center of Amandpur. He was also a poet and composed over 50 hymns. He was tortured and beheaded in Dehli by Muslims. |
Gobind Singh1666 – 1708 | He was the son of Guru Tegh Bahadur.He initiated the Five K’s .The Dasam Granth is a collection of poems written by Gobind Singh |
