Number 13 in the Book of Esther

The number 13 certainly was bad news for the Jews according to the book of Esther.

The wicked Haman was determined to execute all the Jews in the country.

With this gruesome proposal it is no wonder Esther is highly admired and celebrated every year during the feast of Purim.

“Then the king’s secretaries were summoned on the thirteenth day of the first month, and an edict, according to all that Haman all that Haman commanded, was written to the king’s satraps … it was written in the name of King Abasue’rus and sealed with the kings ring.” Esther 3:12

“Letters were sent by couriers to all the king’s provinces, to destroy, to slay, and to annihilate all Jews, young old, women and children, in one day, the thirteenth day of the twelfth month… and to plunder their goods.” Esther 3:13

The Last Supper

The last meal Jesus had with his disciples is probably the most shared explanation why the number 13 is considered unlucky.

The story is told in Matthew chapter 26, Mark chapter 14, Luke chapter 22 and John chapter 13.

Thirteen people were seated at the table; the twelve disciples and Jesus. During the meal Jesus made a statement implying that one person at the table would betray him.

“He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.” John 13:18

Simon Peter asks who the person is. Jesus answered “It is he to whom I shall give this morsel when I have dipped it”. “So then he dipped the morsel and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.

Then after the morsel, Satan entered into him” John 13:26-27

Judas leaves the dinner table. He does betray Jesus. This happened on a Thursday. The next day Jesus was crucified on the cross.

This last meal is when the Eucharist (Holy Communion) was instituted by Jesus.

Judas regretted his actions. He went to Temple with the 30 pieces of silver he had received and then he hung himself.

The 30 pieces of silver was considered blood money by the chief priest and could therefore not be put in the treasury.

The money was used to buy a field to bury strangers in. The field became known as the “Field of Blood”.

Revelation Chapter 13

It may just be a coincidence, but it is Revelation chapter 13 we find the infamous passage about the number of the beast; 666. The whole chapter describes the details and consequences of the two beasts. The last verses of the chapter reveal the number.

“Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless he has that mark, that is the name of the beast or the number of its name.

This calls for wisdom: let him who has understanding reckon the number of the beast, for it is a human number, its number is six hundred and sixty-six.” Revelation 13:16-18

In Roman numerals the number 666 is written DCLXVI. This makes a neat pattern in a similar way as the number 123456 makes a pattern.

The 13 Yule Lads of Iceland

In Iceland there is an old legend of the thirteen Yule Lads.

They are the children of Gryla and LeppalĂşdi, descendants of trolls. The family lives up in the mountains.

Gryla was known to steal naughty children and use the children as ingredients in her stew.

No doubt parents in earlier times told stories about Gryla to keep their children from misbehaving.

Gryla also has a cat that was known to eat any child who did not have a new piece of clothing by Christmas.

The thirteen Yule Lads were quite mischievous, as their names imply. The reputation of the family has fortunately greatly improved.

The thirteen Yule Lads arrive one day at a time and will also leave one day at a time.

Children put a shoe on the window sill.

If the child has been good the Yule Lad will leave a small gift or candy in the shoe.

If the child has been naughty the Yule Lad will leave a potato in the shoe.

    • I’ve experienced the same time frames with the number 13 as you described. Its occurrence has been more and more frequently as of late. Honestly, I feel as though an esoteric or metaphysical “awakening” is taking place currently within our physical realm (has been for awhile now). The more I read (or watch YouTube videos) regarding ancient texts & cultures, sacred geometry, enlightenment, the pineal gland, quantum mechanics & physics, string theory, etc…it’s as if my “third-eye” is opening and I’m beginning to experience a shift in consciousness.

I’ve never looked into numerology until now and will continue to research this subject as part of my spiritual journey. Glad to see I’m not the only one experiencing this. Look into people like Graham Hancock and Randall Carlson. Their writings (along with other many other factors) have changed my prior outlook from an agnostic POV to a spiritual one. Best of luck to you on your journey.

  4. I feel 13 is the connection between God and man, 1 is man, 3 is the Holy Trinity. 12 are the disciples, and Jesus (God) is the 13th.

There may be destruction with 13, but the destruction of the old is necessary for birth of the new. And there is great promise when one gives in to the Will of God, to let oneself destruct so that they can be reborn.

There is fear with 13 because man does not want to give up control. But when one releases control to God (Jesus) he will tear down the old and rebuild you to something greater.

And I quote she said she was going drive me out of my mind. Well she didn’t succeed, but she had a baby so he could grow up and be a pain in my side. I don’t know if it was good or bad luck, but I never had another child after her.

  11. This article helped me clear my apprehensions and doubts regarding this number. Like most of the people, even I used to think, that this number brings bad luck and hence, is not a good number. But this article helped me familiarize with ritual and cultures, which believed that this number is actually very good. Colgate University, Mary Kay, believed that this number is auspicious and also the amendment which abolishes slavery in USA was the thirteenth one. It made me realize, that this number is not that bad and it happened because of this article only! Thanks!
